Nürnberger Hut 125 Year Anniversary |
|
| This is an anniversary which the Nuremberg Section of the German Alpine Club can be proud of, because very few huts in the Alpine region are the same age or older. The Nürnberger Hut in the rear part of the Langental (valley) was opened on 18 August 1886. The idea to acquire a suitable construction site for a hut matured in 1881. In 1884, the Nuremberg Section was supported by a local innkeeper from Ranalt who was prepared to relinquish a plot of land free of charge. The first building turned out to be quite modest. Several expansion structures followed. Goods were brought to the rear part of Ranalt by horse-drawn wagon and transferred to mules and horses there. People had to haul whatever the animals could not transport up to the hut.“Frontier guards” (who also served as customs officials) were constantly stationed at the hut during the war. Despite the long and arduous route from the Stubai Valley, many things were smuggled past the Nürnberger Hut via the narrow Türl Pass into the Ridnaun Valley towards Sterzing in South Tyrol during the economically difficult post-war period. But the smugglers were protected by the local population. The cable lift for transporting goods was inaugurated in the autumn of 1960, and a sewage plant as well as a small power station was built in the following years. |

| The hut proprietors In 1912, the building lease started with Ignaz Pixner from the Passeier Valley and his wife Elisabeth, who was born in Neustift. The couple had five daughters, among them Ludmilla, the grandmother of the current hut leaseholder Leo Siller. Natural catastrophes such as rockslides, avalanches and floods made life difficult for the hut proprietors Ignaz and Maria Siller from 1972 on. Since 1998, Leo and Martina Siller have been managing the hut in the third generation. Ignaz and Maria Siller support the younger proprietors from the valley. |
